“Staying positive and prioritizing my health has been my north star throughout this journey.”

Alisa Mitchell

Hi, I’m Alisa, a military spouse and mother of three. My breast cancer diagnosis completely blindsided me. It all started with unexplained chronic hives—something I hadn’t experienced since my thyroid cancer years ago. Those hives led me to discover a 10×8 cm mass in my right breast, along with affected lymph nodes. Even though cancer runs deep in my family, I thought I was doing all the right things for my health. Hearing the words stage IIIA grade 3 HER2+ breast cancer was still a shock.

A key part of my journey was discovering I carry the CHEK2 gene mutation. Genetic testing didn’t just inform my treatment plan—it helped me protect my children. Knowing their genetic risk means they can take proactive steps toward early detection. That knowledge is a gift, and it brings me peace knowing it could save their lives someday.

I went through six rounds of aggressive TCHP chemotherapy. The side effects were brutal, but with weekly infusions and treatments, I made it through. Now, I’m waiting for final pathology results after my double mastectomy, and I’m hopeful the chemo did its job. Up next: radiation and another year of HER2+ treatment.

What’s gotten me through this? My tribe. My family, my friends, and the incredible support of the breast cancer community, especially BCFCF. They’ve been my rock, reminding me that I’m not fighting alone. I’ve learned to ask the tough questions, lean into my support system, and let the little things go. Staying positive and prioritizing my health has been my north star throughout this journey.

I’m also incredibly grateful for the research and medical advancements that have given me real hope for a cancer-free future. If I can offer any advice, it’s this: Don’t underestimate the power of genetic testing—it could change your life and protect your family. Stay connected, reach out for support, and remember, you’re stronger than you know.

Together, we’re building a future where no one faces this journey alone.
